Free Odometer Check in NSW
In an effort to combat scams, used-car purchasers in NSW now have access to a novel smartphone technology designed to flag unscrupulous sellers who tamper with odometer readings and grossly overprice vehicles.
This development comes as the NSW Government launches complimentary internet-based verifications for used car odometer records, in response to odometer fraud surging four times over the past two years. You can check a vehicle registration from Service NSW website here.
It should be highlighted that odometer readings of newer cars won’t be displayed on the Service NSW smartphone app, as vehicles less than five years old are exempted from the annual safety inspections during registration renewal, which is when odometer readings are typically documented.
How About Other States?
Regrettably, due to the lack of mandatory annual safety inspections in most jurisdictions outside of NSW, other US states cannot provide the same level of historical data on vehicle odometers.
